The Smart Photoelectric Smoke Detector is an internet-connected fire safety device that combines hardware-level smoke detection with IoT capabilities. Rather than relying on a standalone siren that can only be heard locally, these devices use a built-in Wi-Fi module to send push notifications directly to your smartphone the moment smoke is detected, anywhere in the world.

Comparison of a photoelectric alarm and a traditional alarm

When comparing a photoelectric fire alarm to what most people consider a normal traditional fire alarm, you are generally looking at the difference between photoelectric technology (also referred to as optical) and ionization technology.

• Photoelectric alarms:
  • Mechanism: inside the sensing chamber, an infrared LED shoots a straight beam across the room. A light sensor (photodiode) sits off to the side in darkness. When large smoke particles enter, they reflect and scatter the light rays, deflecting them directly into the sensor and completing the alarm circuit.
• Ionization alarms (traditional alarm):
  • Mechanism: These utilize a microscopic amount of radioactive material to ionize the air molecules between two electrically charged plates, creating a continuous, tiny electrical current. When invisible combustion particles enter the chamber, they disrupt and attach to these ions, dropping the current level and triggering the siren.
