I was using a smart bulb before this, but I had two issues: 1) The bulb was not rechargeable, so shed no light within Eskom’s darkness 2) When Eskom did put the lights back on the bulb would also come on automatically with no way to change this default behaviour. Using this smart switch, I now use my good old rechargeable bulb, as I really wasn’t all that interested in the dimming, colour warmth, RGB colours and music modes of the smart bulb anyway. Furthermore, because the unit is powered from 5V USB power I can keep the switch itself online throughout loadshedding, using a small DC UPS designed for home routers. This means I can use the switches built in scheduling, or a smartlife scene whenever I like, regardless of loadshedding status. I have a particularly useful scene that switches the lamp on after hours only if the smartlife alarm system is away armed, and then switches it off later on if it is still away armed. In time I will introduce some variation to this scene by pairing the switch with both the alarm system and a smartlife light meter to control exactly when at night the lamp will be switched on.
I was tearing my hair out trying to find a solution to my two smart bulb problems, so I am very pleased this smart switch could solve those issues so elegantly.
