SCART to HDMI Converter | UP Scaler
An SCART to HDMI Converter is an active hardware device that does the exact opposite of a down scaler. It takes an older analog video and audio signal (SCART) and converts it into a modern, high-definition digital signal (HDMI).
Function of the converter
Because modern displays cannot read analog signals, a simple adapter cable shape-changer will not work. An SCART to HDMI converter relies on an internal processing chipset to actively transform the signal:
- Up-scaling and de-interlacing: standard SCART outputs a low-resolution, interlaced analog signal (typically 576i PAL or 480i NTSC). The converter digitizes these analog scanning lines, de-interlaces them into progressive frames, and up-scales the pixel count to a crisp digital output—usually selectable between 720p or 1080p at 60Hz.
- Aspect ratio preservation: many converters feature an automatic or manual aspect ratio toggle. This lets you choose between stretching the native old-school 4:3 image to fit a modern 16:9 widescreen or keeping it in its original 4:3 box configuration to avoid distortion.
- Audio embedding: the converter captures the analog stereo audio (Left/Right) from the SCART pins, digitizes it, and seamlessly embeds it into the single HDMI stream so video and audio sync perfectly on your modern display.

Typical applications
- Retro gaming: connecting classic 90s and early 2000s consoles to modern 4K or 1080p televisions. Using an RGB-capable SCART converter provides the sharpest possible analog signal these consoles can output.
- Digitizing and legacy media playback: hooking up vintage VCRs, Laserdisc players, or early DVD players to modern screens to view home movies or old physical media collections
- Upgrading older AV equipment: keeping older satellite or terrestrial set-top boxes functional when a household upgrades to a new TV that no longer features legacy analog inputs.
